I always enjoy cooking as it is a type of meditation. It allows me to use my five senses and fully focus on the one task at hand. It teaches us, even though we have a recipe with instructions to follow, it comes down to adjusting and refining it based on our own experiences. Every one gets a personal experience of learning and growing in our own unique way.
Shortbread is supposed to be a very simple recipe. It takes 15 minutes or less to prepare the ingredients, 40 minutes in the fridge and 10 minutes in the oven.
The dough is easy to make, just cream the butter and sugar, add flour and vanilla essence, roll the dough and chill in the fridge until it is firm, and it’s ready to cut!
However, even with a recipe, at times the output does not always turn out as expected. Rather than getting upset, I gave myself a pat on the back for the 1st attempt and then did some research to find out why it didn’t turn out, ie a post mortem.
In my case, it could have been that the oven was not hot enough even though it was set at 180 degrees according to the instructions and the butter melted before the cookies could set.
The butter may have too much water content so may need to try another brand or there is too much air in the dough as a result of mixing the ingredients for too long.
The taste was buttery and delicious except that the short bread flattened. Now that I know the possible causes of the spreading, I can try again.
